Real Learning Counts: Ocean Play Continues (Mini Series – Part 2)
Following our visit to AQWA, the children asked for messy play, so we followed the interest and brought the ocean theme home in a way that was safe, edible, and engaging for our youngest.
We set up an ocean-themed sensory tray using coloured spaghetti, ocean creatures we made from pipe cleaners, and leftover dehydrated orange slices we had used to make Christmas decorations. This kept the play hands-on, exploratory, and toddler-safe, while still allowing for rich learning.
Our 3.5-year-old helped design the scene, thoughtfully adding features and creatures, and deciding where everything belonged. She later chose to dress in her mermaid costume, and we added The Little Mermaid soundtrack in the background to support imaginative play and sustained engagement.
Our toddler explored the materials in his own way, sorting different textures into pop sticks and pipe cleaners, then practicing movement inspired by the animals we’d been learning about. He experimented with jellyfish blobs, crocodile snaps, and turtle swims and hides, moving both the objects and his own body.
What looked like “just messy play” was actually deep, differentiated learning, with each child engaging at their own developmental level through the same shared experience.
What learning looked like:
• Sensory exploration – textures, colours, resistance, and movement
• Creative thinking & planning – designing a scene and adding features
• Imaginative play – creating characters and scenarios
• Sorting & categorising – grouping materials by type and texture
• Gross motor development – moving bodies like animals
• Fine motor skills – manipulating spaghetti, pipe cleaners, and small objects
• Auditory & emotional regulation – background music supporting calm engagement
When we extend real-world experiences into play, children don’t just revisit learning, they deepen it. Shared themes allow siblings of different ages to learn together, each in their own way.(Mini series continues… )
